Today’s #AddJoy challenge is to eat something that’s in season!
One of the reasons I started this blog is because I wanted to learn how to eat in season. Hence why I started cooking through Simply in Season Expanded Edition (World Community Cookbook). You might think that since I grew up in a farming community I’d know what’s in season like the back of my hand. You’d be wrong.
Turns out I’m not the only one who doesn’t know. It’s one of the questions I get most often when I tell people about my blog, and when I go to cooking classes about eating locally. When I was part of a CSA, I learned the general time frames for when things were in season. However, I’ve also learned that it varies quite a bit depending on the weather, from farm to farm and whether or not they use season-extending techniques or hydroponics. Early June used to be pretty much rhubarb and asparagus, but now the farmers market has locally, hydroponically grown tomatoes. Does that count as seasonal?
