My husband and I are not big sports fans. At least not the kind shown on TV. We’re more into running and triathlons.

However, any excuse is a great excuse for a party–or at least party food! One of our favorites is Atomic Buffalo Turds. It’s always a crowd-pleaser. I’m not sure who originally came up with the name, but whenever we have a brew day or get the smoker out for a get together someone will throw these in.

Although they are traditionally smoked, you can also cook them on a grill or even in the oven. And, the variations are endless. Add smokies or chorizo. Stir in cheese or seasonings with the cream cheese. Go crazy!

  • Category: Appetizers

Ingredients

  • 12 fresh jalapeno peppers, halved and seeded
  • 12 slices of bacon
  • 24 little smokies, or cooked chorizo (optional)
  • 1 package of cream cheese (room temperature)

Instructions

  1. Fill the pepper with cream cheese (and smokies/chorizo if using), wrap in bacon, use toothpick if needed to keep together.
  2. Place in smoker at 250 for an hour and a half or 300 degrees for an hour. Basically, you want to get the bacon crispy but not overcooked or the peppers will fall apart.
  3. Alternate cooking methods: To cook on the grill: Cook on a medium heat grill until the jalapeno is tender and the bacon is browned. Keep the lid covered while cooking. To cook in the oven: Bake the ABT’s in the oven, set at 425F, for 20-30 minutes or until the bacon is browned.

The name just cracks me up! We had a bumper crop of jalapeno peppers last summer – could have used this delicious recipe. What a great game day app!
