Now that cold weather has arrived, I find myself craving more meat and less stir fries, pasta, and other things that are quickly thrown together. Yet I still work 8-5 Monday – Friday, commute, and have other things going on in my life. Enter the pressure cooker.
Now, I know that pressure cookers are often associated with vegetarians and Indian cuisine. But I have found it tremendously helpful in my locavore adventures. DH doesn’t like meat cooked in a slow cooker, and by using a pressure cooker I can cook the meat and root vegetables in the same pot, in less than an hour. In the winter, the most readily available local foods are root vegetables and meat.
Whether you are considering a pressure cooker and want to learn more about how they work and what you can do with them, or already have pressure cooker and want to explore cooking beyond the things listed in the pamphlet that came with it, here are four excellent websites:
Laura’s site is a plethora of information, with tons of recipes and a Beginner Basics series that provides tips, tricks, and information for getting started. You can also easily find recipes by type, season, course, diet, and difficulty.
Miss Vickie’s Pressure Cooker Recipes
When I was researching pressure cookers, this site kept popping up, and indeed it seems to be the go-to site for information about recipes as well as pressure cooker recommendations, parts and accessory information, and tutorials. There’s even a fairly active forum.
This blog seems to be a bit newer, so it doesn’t have a *ton* of recipes in comparison to Miss Vickie’s, but the ones that are there seem like things I would want to make. I also like that she has some videos.
Pressure Cooking with Lorna Sass
Apparently she is known as “The Queen of Pressure Cooking.” She is also a widely published food writer and an award-winning author of 15 cookbooks. Her blog contains pressure cooker recipes and chronicles Lorna’s ongoing adventures with the “pc.”

The Local Cook
you’re welcome – I’ll be visiting your site often this winter!
Leslie
Thanks for including us!
We also try to eat local meats and veggies, and are lucky to have a veggie and meat CSA close by plus a year round farmers market. It’s definitely harder in the winter, but the pressure cooker does help by making fantastic soups, stews, and chili, among other things. We’re still learning and exploring our pressure cooker, and definitely look forward to hearing what you make with yours. :~)

I am having a difficult time finding a blog that compares different types of pressure cookers. Have you found any place online that has that info.? I’m looking at investing in the BRK brand.
The Local Cook
Priscilla, Miss Vickie’s is the most thorough site I’ve found. Here is a wealth of info from her site: http://missvickie.com/workshop/buying.html
You’ll notice she recommends the Kuhn Rikon or, for the budget conscious (like me LOL) the Fagor. Like you, I wasn’t able to find any side-by-side comparisons when I searched online, and very few reviews of BRK, but there were some references to people liking it on some of the forums so if you have your heart set on it give it a try – and make sure they have a good return policy just in case 🙂 I was at a food blogger conference and someone mentioned that they ordered three juicers to try out, and they returned the two that they liked the least, even after using them awhile! I would have never thought of that!
