One morning I made steel cut oats while I was getting ready for work, and I realized the brown sugar was rock hard. I went to my cupboard, and the honey was crystallized. So I rummaged through my cabinets and found some fancy vanilla sugar. I don’t remember when I bought it, but I suspect since it was $7.99 for six ounces I was saving it for something. Why not today?
I am so guilty of buying fancy ingredients and then not using them. For some reason it feels like I should save them for a special time. But really, I have never run out of anything except a lemon infused olive oil that I put on EVERYTHING one summer. When I DO use them, it makes me smile and I wonder why I don’t use them more.
How many “fancy” oils, sugars, or other stuff do you have in the cupboard waiting for something. Go use it! Today is the day.
P.S. Here’s how I make steel cut oats: Put one cup of steel cut oats in a large pot. Stir in 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil; reduce to a simmer; stir occasionally. It takes about 20 minutes.

That sugar looks so amazing! I have to say that I am also guilty of this! I have been working on cleaning out my pantry and spice cupboard so I will def be using things I have been ‘saving’ for that special day!

I’ve never heard of Vanilla sugar.
I also normally put a little brown sugar on my oatmeal. Vanilla sugar sounds like an interesting way to mix it up!

I have a friend who makes all kinds of infused sugars. Basil, lemon balm, etc. So yummy.

I tend to buy the cheaper ingredients but then again I don’t cook that often! I am so busy with work that it’s hard for me to take time to actually make a decent meal. Most of my foods are quick and easy.

You would be surprised how much special ingredients can totally make something great! Just a simple balsamic and fig vinegar with olive oil makes the best dressing.

I do this with a lot of things. I save the fancy towels, the fancy dishes, the fancy soaps and lotions, etc. What am I waiting on? We all deserve some fancy!

Heck yeah!
