It’s been a month since I completed my first marathon, and I feel like I’m just now getting my legs back. Last weekend (June 18) I participated in The Meijer LPGA 5K Run & Walk presented by Kellogg’s. My favorite part of this race, aside from the fact that I get a complimentary media entry, is the Special K Red Berries at the end. I hardly ever buy cereal and it is my FAVORITE. This is a small race, which has its upsides and downsides, as I mentioned last year.
Pros:
- No need to arrive super early
- easy parking
- short lines for the port a johns
- not competitive
- awesome breakfast at the end
- good crowd support
Cons:
- no pacers or signs, which means you are fighting strollers and walkers right out of the gate
- one aid station
- course is downhill the first mile, uphill the second mile, and the third mile tricks you by being longer than it looks
I hope to do it again next year, if only for the cereal 🙂 I was also pleasantly surprised to see that even though I didn’t PR, I shaved a good two minutes off my average minutes per mile compared to last year when I did this race. I’m still slower than I was at the beginning of the year, and I think I’m going to do some shorter weekday runs to get back into the groove. I haven’t yet signed up for the fall marathon so I don’t feel a lot of urgency to start pounding out the miles. But I do have some 5Ks that I’m looking forward to which I am getting to participate in as a “media” entry.
The Hard Cider Run will be in Ada, MI on August 13.

Dash through the orchard in pursuit of a yummy glass of hard cider! Participants of The Hard Cider Run will enjoy a picturesque 5K run before enjoying a complimentary glass of the good stuff.
The Great Pumpkin Run will be in Greenville, MI on October 1.

Get ready to tackle 3.1 miles at Klackle Orchards located ideally between Grand Rapids and Lansing. Participants will enjoy a trail run that covers the gorgeous grounds of the orchard. Traverse apple rows, dash down country dirt roads, and wind through the corn maze before celebrating everything that’s great about fall at the finish line!
I am also planning to get back into cross training and regular running. I have sort of let things slack while spending time on my nutrition certification and now setting up different nutrition education programs. But I need to make it a priority. After all, if I encourage my clients to exercise daily I should be doing it too!

Awesome job on your 5k and shaving off that much time! I don’t eat that much cereal either but I’d so run for that!! Thanks lady for linking up!
