Ingredients
- 2 cups packed dark brown sugar
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 eggs, slightly beaten
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon allspice
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 3 cups sifted flour
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup chopped walnuts
- 2 cups chopped dates
- 16 ounces dark beer
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350F.
- Cream together brown sugar, butter and vanilla in a large bowl. Add eggs and beat until smooth. Set aside.
- In another bowl sift together the cinnamon, allspice, cloves, flour, baking soda and salt. Dust the walnuts and dates in a small bit of the flour mixture.
- Add the rest of the flour mixture alternately with the beer to the creamed sugar, stirring after each addition. Spoon the batter into a very well greased and floured tube pan.
- Bake at 350F for 1 1/4 hours or until a toothpick inserted into center of cake comes out clean.
- Let the cake stand 5 minutes and then invert it onto a wire rack to cool. Remove from the pan. Transfer the coffee cake to a serving dish. Dust the top with powdered sugar.
