When I was thinking about what topics would #AddJoy for this series, I of course consulted several events calendars. Imagine my surprise to discover that there’s a World Radio Day!
I really should know that. I mean, I work for an international disaster response and community development organization! But really, I don’t feel *that* bad. I mentioned it to my coworkers and they were like, “That’s a thing?”
I’m not sure who listens to radio for entertainment any more. I myself am much more likely to listen to Pandora than the radio. But sometimes it’s fun to listen to local radio personalities, or the BBC on NPR for news.
Back before MP3s and CDs, I used to make mixed tapes by waiting for hours until my favorite song came on and I could hit the record button on my pink boom box.
Today’s #AddJoy challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to listen to the actual radio! Let us know what your favorite song is.

Incidentally, I was inspired to do a little research to find out how World Renew (the organization for which I work) uses radio in developing countries. I discovered quite a bit!
Radio has helped
- advocate against drunkenness in Uganda
- encourage good leadership in Haiti
- reduce conflict in southern Sudan
- help sex workers get off the street in Tanzania
and much more.
