If you’re looking to green your home, you might want to check out the book Planet Home: Conscious Choices for Cleaning and Greening the World You Care About Most by Jeffrey Hollender (cofounder of Seventh Generation). It includes hundreds of practical tips for any budget!
At first I was a bit wary, thinking maybe it would be a thinly veiled marketing shtick for Seventh Generation products. Surprisingly, it includes information on how to make your OWN cleaning products!
It’s very readable, with lots of checklists and helpful hints divided into the following sections:
- cleaning products and chemicals: your essential guide
- the kitchen
- food
- the bedroom
- the nursery and kids’ rooms
- the family rooms: living room, dining room, media room, and den
- the bathroom
- the utility rooms: attic, garage, mudroom, and basement
- the laundry room
- the home office
- the big picture
It also includes an ingredients guide, list of resources, references, and an index. I like how it doesn’t just tell you how to clean things, but also what issues you need to consider in each area of your home and what products are more green than others. There’s even information in the “bedroom” section on how to purchase greener sex toys, and how to recycle old ones!
The Verdict: Overall, I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. Whether you are making your first baby steps toward becoming more green or are a pro, there are ideas that you can use right away.

This is great! I’m so glad that things like this are coming out….my family has never really used ‘traditional’ cleaning products..my mom has always believed that they’re full of chemicals and toxins and that they’re very rarely necessary..so we’ve always used/made a lot of our own cleaning supplies 🙂

I couldn’t figure out how to comment on your blog, but I wanted to say thank you for posting about the shooting. It has been heavy on my heart as well.
And good for you for growing up in a family that values the nontraditional. Let me know if you’d like to do a guest post about your favorite homemade cleaning supplies!
