Yesterday I did TWO, count ’em, TWO things to nourish my body! The first one: I went to Nourish Organic Market for my weekly grocery trip.
Nourish advertises itself as the third best way to get your food. #1 is to grow it yourself. (Ha! I love gardening, but not that much. I am really glad I don’t have to live off what I can grow myself.) #2 is to buy direct from the farm (I do love this way, but I am not able to get my butt out of bed on Saturday mornings for the farmers market). #3 – my favorite – is to buy it at Nourish Organic Market. Everything is organic and labeled as to origin. The owner is very sweet and willing to research where to get things locally and organically.
You might recall my struggle over lunches . . . that’s when I decided to make a habit of going to Nourish every Monday for lunch and dinner ingredients. I treat myself by getting something from their deli for lunch. Luckily my work has a refrigerator where I can store any perishables. I have found it much easier to do this on my lunch hour rather than try to carve out evening or weekend time.
A quick kitchen tip: Take a photo of your recipe on your smart phone, rather than rewriting the ingredients that you need. This works best if you’re only shopping for one or two recipes at a time.
I still buy stuff at the regular grocery store from time to time, but I try to make this my main trip. I love their bulk section for grains, beans, and other dry goods. They also have a nice selection of vegetables, local cheese, meat, and eggs. It’s not the cheapest place to shop by any stretch of the imagination but I find it has a lot of things I can’t find elsewhere. Also, they don’t look at me funny when I bring my own bags. I actually enjoy shopping here – unlike the mega mart where I have to walk for miles and fight the crowds.
Kind of a funny story about the barley . . . I’ll be making a beef and barley skillet later this week so I had to get some barley from one of the dispensers shown above. For some reason I was not able to get the dispenser closed and I completely filled the bag I had brought before the sales clerk was able to help me get it closed. I ended up buying 8 pounds of barley! (It’s about a gallon size). She offered to let me return some but I decided to take it as a challenge.
So, what was the second nourishing thing that I did? When I got home, I made DH go for a walk with me while the meatloaf he had started finished cooking. It was nice and warm and still light out! OK, so warm is in the 40s, but it was still pleasant. Today we are back down to normal Michigan winter temps (20s) with lots of snow.
I hope you’re enjoying this nourishing series – I’m having a lot of fun with it, and I’m especially enjoying your comments!
Is your grocery shopping a nourishing experience?
