I’m not sure how long it’s been since I was a regular movie-goer. Over the years, as things like On Demand and NetFlix came along and the prices at the movie theaters became crazy expensive, DH and I simply stopped going. Once every other year or so he would drag me to Transformers, and I enjoyed it, but it wasn’t worth the money to me.
However, I have been two movies recently. Crazy! And you know what? I think I’m starting to like them. The first one I saw recently was Transformers. For some reason, maybe because you aren’t allowed to play HayDay or check Facebook on your phone during the movie, I found myself getting lost in the movie. Despite the cheesy one liners, I found myself rooting for Optimus Prime and thinking deep thoughts, like why did I think that the dad looked young enough to be the high schooler’s boyfriend? Is it really possible that had DH and I had kids that they could be in high school or college right now?
The second movie I saw was this past weekend with a local foodie group that I’m a part of. (EatGR if you’re from West Michigan). We had a dinner and a movie meetup where we watched The 100 Foot Journey and then we went out for Indian food for a private buffet for all 53 of us.
Once again I found myself really paying attention. Tearing up at parts. It was a Disney movie so I knew it was going to have a happy ending, but still . . . I found myself wishing I could visit India again. Thinking about the nature of love, and patriotism, and the determination of the Indian immigrants to thrive in a French town where they were not accepted. The meaning of family.
I can get the same effect if I find a quiet corner and a good book, but both quiet corners and good books are increasingly difficult to find these days. There are always emails and messages and laundry calling to me. Going to the movies effectively forces me to unplug and sit for two hours. So, while I won’t be fighting the crowds any time soon to see the latest hot release, I will be taking in more matinees with DH.
