A few weeks ago I mentioned Cerra™, a company that’s sponsoring conversation around a topic that’s near and dear to my heart: Becoming your best self.
Their products and website are designed to “help you be aware of your thoughts and feelings, act with thoughtful intention, and reflect on your experiences, leading to a happier, more balanced life.”
Their organizational philosophy is rooted in what they call the Seven Intentions– Creative Energy, Gratitude, Courage, Wisdom, Loving Kindness, Groundedand Inspiration. Thus their prescription says that living with these Seven Intentions produces balance and well-being.
I was asked to choose an intention and describe how it has made me a better person. Of course I chose one of the intentions I wrote about a few weeks ago—being grounded.
Cerra says, “Everything grows from a secure base. Like a century-old tree with roots running deep, we can flourish when we’re grounded. The ground is an ancient source of strength. When rooted with purpose, you thrive in mind, body and spirit.”
I would say that the time in my life when I grew the most was going through my divorce about seven years ago. My entire life was crumbling around me, like a house built on shifting sand. I realized that I needed to return to the solid foundation of my faith. Even though I had head knowledge of God, I needed to make sure I had a heart relationship, too. I took a tai chi and yoga class at our local Dominican Center. I took up Christian meditation and got into the Word. When I did meet my husband, I was in a much better place and we were able to build a solid foundation for our marriage.
I still need to remind myself now and then to remain rooted in the Word. Life gets busy, I start living in my head and not with my heart and body. Eating locally helps me remember where my food comes from; and that roots me, because it is a reminder that everything we have comes from God. If you have ever watched a vegetable grow from seed, you know that it has to be a miracle. It also reminds me of growing up watching my parent’s and grandparent’s gardens grow, which also reminds me of my childhood and secure upbringing. I was fortunate to have a very loving family and Christian community around me.
By having a solid base, I am better able to tackle what life throws my way. It’s good to remember to take time for myself, for my faith, and rejuvenate so that I can face the world refreshed.
