So I had these spring turnips from the CSA pickup and no recipes in Simply In Season that called for them. Lucky me, I have a couple of cookbooks in my “to review” pile. I found a recipe in Eating Local: The Cookbook Inspired by America’s Farmers that sounded good. (Look for the review next Friday!)
FOR PRINTABLE VERSION CLICK HERE: Grilled Sausages with Baby Turnips and Turnip Greens
2 lbs turnips (with greens attached; I didn’t have enough turnips, so I used the small bunch I had and supplemented with a bunch of kale)
1/4 cup olive oil
1 small dried red chile broken in half (didn’t have one of these either so I used red chile flakes)
1 dash sea salt
2 cloves garlic (minced)
4 fresh sausages (such as hot or sweet Italian; 6 oz each; I picked these up at the farmer’s market. We have some great local sausage!)
hot pepper vinegar (I didn’t have this either, so we used sriracha sauce. Hmmm, does it count as the same recipe if I’ve switched so many ingredients?)
1. Grill the sausages until internal temperature registers 145F-150F.
2. Meanwhile, take the turnip greens and boil in a pot of salted water for 3-5 minutes. Strain, rinse with cold water, and strain again.
3. In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the turnips (cut in half) and chile and salt to taste; toss to coat with the oil. Cover and cook until the turnips are lightly browned in spots and the cut sides are almost tender when pierced, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook another minute or so to release the fragrance.
4. Add the greens and heat through. Serve alongside the sausages.
Servings: 4
The Verdict: Nice and spicy! Loved how the kale and spicy sausage complemented the strong flavor of the turnips. Even DH ate his share. Of course, he added a bun and cheese.
