I just realized that I haven’t given a garden update in awhile. We’ve been getting LOTS of rain this year, which means I haven’t had to water. Which is nice. The marigolds that I thought were dead came back quite nicely, and seem to be keeping the rabbits away from my side yard garden.
The cucumbers seem to be coming along nicely. Unlike the melons, which I fear are dead. I can’t tell if it is melon plants or weeds coming up in that section of the side yard garden, so I’ll wait and see. I think I waited too long to plant them.
The tomato plants are doing well. I even have a teeny tiny cherry tomato on one of them.
The pepper plants are getting lots of flowers, even though something is chewing the leaves. Flea beetles, I think. Drat.
The tomatoes and peppers seem to be doing better in this location than the back yard location. Probably because it gets a bit more sun. Speaking of which, DH got a little chainsaw happy on Saturday and decided to trim the trees.
It only took him an hour with an extended chainsaw to make a HUGE mess. Last night I got to run the wood chipper for the first time which was fun. We have hours of work left to do. Hopefully the extra sun will help the gardens.
On to the spring garden in our backyard:
The peas are about done for some reason. I’ve harvested a couple of handfuls and that’s it. Next year I’ve decided I’ll make both 4×8 beds spring gardens. They will be done in time to convert them to fall gardens. The carrots are coming in nicely.
Cilantro and kale are doing well. Lettuce was a bit battered by the rains. For some reason the kale on the left side is twice as big as the kale on the right side of the row. Sun maybe? Oh, and the Asian greens–the mystery plant with the yellow flowers turned out to be broccoli rabe. I got some from my CSA and recognized it immediately.
My nasturtiums are coming along. The herbs in my planters are growing a lot more slowly than I thought they would. Then again, maybe my expectations are unrealistic. It’s only my second year of gardening, so I’m still learning.
What’s growing in your garden?
