What’s growing in my garden:

I’ll be planting the rest of my vegetable plants this week (hopefully). It’s so exciting to see things growing. I have learned a lot over the past couple of weeks. For example
- Thin plants when they are 2-3″ tall. Pull them out after a rain when the dirt is loose, or use garden scissors to cut the ones you don’t need. Be ruthless!
- Pea seedlings taste like peas.
- All plants look alike when they first emerge (called cotyledens).
- When transplanting herbs, it helps to give them a good trimming so they can spend their energy on growing their roots.
- When transplanting sorrel, cut it down to an inch or so.
- If growing herbs in containers, you need to keep them fertilized or they will use all the nutrients up before you know it and die.
- Plant cilantro seeds every couple of weeks as it bolts in hot weather.
- Always plant mint in a pot, or somewhere you won’t mind it taking over.
- Chives are perennials and come back every year.
- If you can find someone with perennial herbs who wants to divide them, it’s much cheaper than buying the seedlings!
I’m sure I’ll have more tips as things move along. What are some of yours?

WOW! I am impressed! That really looks beautiful! And tasty, too1
Lookin’ goooood! Soundin’ tasty. Nice job on the revamped herb garden: a piece under control = a feeling of ccomplishment. Small “doable” segments are a good way to tackle a big project. Keep up the good work.
Great tips! Guess I’m going to get some fertilizer for my basil! Your plants look great!
Wow, I want a garden so bad but I just don’t devote the time to it. These are really good tips for someone like me though!
I have herbs growing in containers and didn’t know I need to keep them fertilized. Thanks for the tips and your garden looks great. Do you can too?
I do! Not as much as I’d like but then, I guess there are always projects we’d *like* to do.
Your garden is looking great! Thanks for the tips about herbs; I’ve never had luck planting them in pots, and now I know that I need to fertilize!
We just ate some lettuce out of our garden the other night…yum!
Thanks for joining my party 🙂
I love that edged bed, very nice. What type of kale is that? It looks tender.
It’s Russian Red. More of a fall kale but I thought I’d give it a try.
Great, useful tips! Thank you! Soooo true about planting mint!
