It’s been awhile since I posted a Fitness Friday report. How am I doing?
I have lost 12 pounds so far since mid-January. Not bad, but not super good either since a lot of that was at the beginning. I’ve found myself falling off the wagon here and there. Time to recommit. I finished my Move it to Lose it program this week at the YMCA, which provided great workouts but I found myself disagreeing with a lot of the nutritional suggestions. For example, low fat dairy, WAY more carbs than protein, etc. I am still going to track calories but now that I don’t have the “nutrition police” looking over myshoulder I’m going to enjoy my raw milk smoothies a lot more.
I also joined a couch to 5K group, and we’re training together for the 5/3 Riverbank Run. I have done the couch to 5K program so many times I can’t remember, but for some reason I usually do the first couple of weeks and then push through and run all 3 miles. Which isn’t so good for building speed. Or endurance. After the traithlon or 5K I usually go back to a more sedentary lifestyle. I’m hoping to make it stick this time!
Building habits sure is hard, isn’t it? It’s so easy to slip back into old routines. For example, in preparation for my Food & Faith Challenge, I’ve been revisiting a lot of topics that I’ve read about, but am looking at in a new light. I’m starting to think that I should try to not eat meat from fast food places or restaurants where I don’t know where it came from or how it was raised / killed. A couple of days ago I forgot to bring my lunch so I thought I’d swing through a drive thru. Hmmm, which have vegetarian options? I finally settled on Taco Bell and got the bean fresco burrito. Then as I was eating it I realized that the “cheese” was probably not cheese at all, and that the tomatoes were probably picked by slaves. Sigh.
I don’t have the answer, other than “remember to bring your lunch.” Sorry to disappoint you. But that’s what this blog is about, isn’t it? Not about me having the answers, but looking for the answers.

It’s really hard to find places to eat out. It’s gotten to where I give myself an upset stomach before we even get to the place we’re going to eat. I love to eat out, but I’m tired of my stomach hurting. It’s time to recommit to eating at home.

We try to choose Chipotle or Subway for fast food if we need to eat on the road.

I can totally relate. I’m fortunate to have a health food store near my office, where I can go for some “real” food if I forget my lunch. However, you can’t be perfect all the time. Especially when traveling…you have to eat what’s available sometimes. Your thought about not eating meat at fast food or other restaurants is a good one, and something I committed to years ago. Baby steps, right? My latest thing is now I’m getting very picky about what fish I eat. There is always some new bad thing to avoid. 🙁

It’s always about doing the best you can where you are. I likewise always try to find a grocery store over fast food if I forget lunch. If nothing else, I know I can find some decent cheese, some fruit, some bulk nuts or something of the sort. I like that we can look for the answers together.

Congrats on your weight loss so far! I agree starting a new habit can be hard, but your doing really well.
And yeah, sometimes it is best to bring your own lunch! LOL.
Happy Saturday Sharefest!

It can be confusing trying to be healthy. As soon as you think you’ve figured it all out. A new report comes out.
I’m going through the same thing. Good job on the 12lbs.
