I’ve decided that my garden is mostly for snacking. To recap: The herbs have dried up, from lack of watering, never having quite recovered from the long 4th of July weekend in intense heat with no water. The carrots and beets were eaten by rabbits when they sprouted. The peas are over and done with, the remainder eaten by my dogs. And my cantaloupe plant’s life was cut short by another rabbit.
My pepper plants are SLOOOOWWWWLLLY coming along. And my okra is slowly spitting them out one by one. But my lone cucumber plant is taking over the world.
Isn’t that crazy? It’s grown up over the fence and is climbing our screened in porch. It’s reached the roof! (Note Nero in the lower right hand corner of the photo, he’s quite disappointed that the peas are finished for the year.)
Here’s the corner view of our porch – another vine went up the other side. One plant, multiple vines. Crazy! It is quite fun to sit on the porch and watch the bees pollinate the cucumber flowers though. And I’ve discovered not to let the cucumbers get too big as they are much tastier when medium sized.
I did try to thin the tomatoes out a bit, but they are still very thick. I love to just pick the ripe ones every night and eat them for a snack. Between the cucumbers and the tomatoes, I’m not very hungry for dinner.
My pitiful okra – I don’t think it’s getting enough sun.
My pitiful peppers. Sigh. At least there are flowers, so something must still be coming.
I also took photos at my CSA pickup last Thursday. One of the workers (I’m guessing 20s?) looked at me a little funny. She said “I gotta ask . . . you’re taking pictures of the vegetables? Can I help you with something?” I said “nope. I AM taking pictures of the vegetables.” In this day and age you wouldn’t think she would think it odd.
We had to choose between a mini cabbage or full size cabbage. I chose the full size – hoping to try my hand at sauerkraut!
We also were allotted 0.5 pounds of salad greens.
We were to choose a bunch of herbs. I picked chives.
This is how you know how much to pick up. The chalkboard also gives announcements, like what you can U pick.
Look at THEIR peppers! Doing much better than mine.
Their cucumbers are nice and big too.
Glaciers and heirloom tomatoes. Mmmm!
Look on the end – it’s garlic! How cool is that?

Oh my…my pepper plants have been a royal fail this year, so I’m glad to hear that someone else is having problems with them as well. 🙁 We don’t have a CSA (that I know of) in our area, so I stick to the grocery sales (just picked up bell peppers for $0.68/each last night). I was really hoping to be able to pick them from the garden…but no such luck. 🙁 Thanks for sharing your produce!

The garlic was incredible!!! I MUST try planting garlic myself this fall.
I chose the broccoli also, but it is still in the fridge. I want to try roasting it, but I don’t want my oven on:(

Those veggies have me drooling! Don’t give up on those peppers – mine have finally started putting on. Love your renegade cucumber vines! 🙂

You CSA is wonderful! We don’t get options like that (they will substitute things if you are allergic… and I recently developed an “allergy” to cilantro so I don’t have to get huges bunches of that anymore…). Lots of great varieties! Thanks for sharing!

Wonderful veggies. Yours seem to be doing very well. I am not getting huge amounts like the last two years. I think the heat is doing me in.

Your cucumber plant is out of control!! Your CSA looks a great place to shop, excellent shots of the veggies, doesn’t everyone do that? What was the assistant thinking? LOL

Hoho. Asking like “are you taking pictures of the vegetables?” is the odd one. LOL. I mean, hey, it is the 21th century and you had that gut to ask that question so primitively. LOL. Just kidding. But your plants are really doing great. Also, I should say their harvest is pretty great. I wanna visit and have some quick marketing for my recipes today.
