I actually read a prepublished copy of Blood, Bones & Butter: The Inadvertent Education of a Reluctant Chef last year, and have been patiently waiting to review it. Since it comes out in a few weeks, I am posting my review now!
This book is an autobiography of Gabrielle Hamilton, who owns a famous restaurant blah blah blah. What completely engaged me was how non-pretentious she is. While chefs seem to be movie stars these days, she lets you in on a life that was not-so-glamorous. A broken home, things you’d rather not know about catering, drugs, lesbian lovers, and a rocky marriage are revealed in a way that doesn’t seem cliche’. I couldn’t put the book down.
What I liked best (other than her very accurate description of people in the Midwest, which she encountered briefly while at the University of Michigan) was that it is not a glossed-over star story. It’s real. It’s bones, blood, and butter. It makes you think “hey, maybe I could open a restaurant,” and “you know, life might not be perfect, but I like it.”
If you’re looking for an inspirational read, definitely put this on hold at the library!

I was reading on Mckmama’s blog that you are trying to lose 100 lbs. I am too. After 3 kids I need to lose about 100 lbs. and at every attempt, I have lost and then gained. Have you ever heard of Dr. Simeon’s from “pounds to inches”? Or hcg? It is a homeopathic weight loss plan. I started it 5 days ago and I have lost 8 lbs. I was skeptical too, until I started taking these drops and I am amazed that I am really not hungry and only eating 500 calories a day. I just wanted to tell you about it, after reading the book I was shocked that it really could be that my body is just kind of messed up and that is why I can’t lose weight. Just felt like I should share. If you have any questions just email me. I can let you know the website where I bought my drops. I make absolutely NOTHING off of sharing this information. I just understand what it is like to step on the scale and think… How am I going to do this?
The Local Cook
Thanks for stopping by! I have not heard of that specific book but 500 calories seems REALLY low. As a local food advocate and food blogger, I’m determined to do this the healthy way – eating as clean as possible, and in a way that I know I can sustain. Good luck to you!
