This week’s Tuesday on the Run theme is Things I Dislike About Running. Ironically, I was just composing a list in my head while running the other day! Some of this is a bit tongue in cheek, but other things really are annoying. I’ll let you figure out which are which.
1. It seriously cuts into my TV time.
There once was a time that I actually knew which shows DH had programmed into our DVR. Now I really don’t have a clue. Occasionally we will binge watch a Netflix series but when I do sit down in front of the TV I am multitasking to catch up on laundry, meal planning, etc.
2. Peer pressure.
When you are part of a running group, things like “sure, a hundie sounds fun!” or “sure, let’s do a 22 mile fun run this weekend!” come out of your mouth without even realizing it.
3. All the laundry.
I swear, running clothes multiply in the laundry and somehow there are never enough clean leggings.
4. All the showers.
Know what’s annoying? Running in the evening, taking a shower, then getting up the next morning, running again, and showering AGAIN.
5. All the shoes.
I hate to think about how much DH and I have spent on shoes over the past couple of years. It’s all about finding the elusive “perfect” $100-$150 pair of shoes. And of course when they have worn out you don’t want to throw them out, so they become your yard pair. And before you know it your closet is overtaken with old shoes.
6. Exposure to the elements.
-6, 90, rain, wind, snow, bugs, sun–all things I could easily avoid in my nice temperature controlled home if I was not a runner.
7. Having to work harder to burn calories.
It used to be that I’d get winded just walking across the airport. Now I have to keep increasing my speed and distance to get a workout. So not fair!
8. Pooping in the woods.
I never thought I’d do it . . . but it is very common, and I never go on a long trail run without my little baggie of TP and hand sanitizer. Even worse, when running with friends, we talk about digestive issues all.the.time.
9. Having to post on social media.
I realized that I was becoming one of “those” people, so I stopped posting my runs on Facebook. But then people I barely knew would meet me in person and say, “Hey, you’ve been kind of slacking lately!” So rather than have to explain that I was just trying not to post so much, I have started posting again. Unlike some other runners, I do not have the gift of the perfect sweaty running selfie. I look like someone who has just run.
10. Having to explain all of the above to non runners.
It’s hard to know what to say when people tell me they would only run if they were being chased by a bear. Or stare in disbelief when I say I’m training for a double marathon. “Why would you want to do that?” they ask. My answer? “Because I can.” There may be a day when I cannot run, when I cannot commiserate and celebrate with my running friends on Facebook, when I cannot poop in the woods, when I no longer burn calories, soak up the sunshine, meet inspirational people, nor miss TV shows.
Today is not that day.
The Weekly Wrap
It continues to be a challenge to fit in all my runs around other activities. I’ve decided to just do the best I can and enjoy life when I can. It will all work out.
Monday: 9 mile run, 45 minute swimming lesson. I have one more left and am really going to miss it!
Wednesday: Valentine’s Day edition of Hills & Stairs. About 3 1/2 miles.
Thursday: 4 mile run
Friday: Out for a friend’s birthday . . . which led to a late night and not running on Saturday, either LOL
Sunday: 12 mile run

I don’t think running cuts into my tv time since I have a treadmill in front of the tv. Kill two birds with one stone. I do spend so much money on shoes. I like to think of myself as thrifty and hate even spending $100 on shoes. But I keep telling myself, I use them everyday and will get my money’s worth out of them.

I cannot do treadmills. But if I am traveling and have to I definitely watch TV!

What a cute post! It is funny how open runners are about digestive issues, chafing, etc. Even when they don’t know each other that well 🙂
Great post!
Wendy Hammond
yes! Although my husband says the women talk about it more than men 😉
Wendy
You pretty much nailed it! But doesn’t the community of runners make it all better?
Thanks for linking!
Wendy Hammond
yes, it’s great not being alone!

All the laundry!! Yesterday I had to pull out a stinky pair of leggings from the laundry basket for my run as I had run out of leggings! Laundry (and showers, lol!) have doubled since I started running!
Wendy Hammond
I runfess I may have pulled some tights out of the laundry before LOL
Kelly @ Noodle to the Rescue
LOL, Yep to #5 for me this month. I do love getting new running shoes but I splurged on THREE pairs this month and that was my entire “fun money” budget (and then some)…
Wendy Hammond
oooh I have not done three in one month before! Go you!
Marcia
The price of shoes these days really has gotten out of control. I runfess I haven’t yet pooped in the woods. Now that I said that, I’ll most likely have to. Haha! Thanks for linking!
Wendy Hammond
I am shocked how many commenters have NOT pooped in the woods! It’s like a trail runner’s rite of passage. That and getting “trail flair” (scratched from tripping and falling into branches)
Chocolaterunsjudy
Oh yes, all the showers (shower wipes are my friend) and all the laundry.
Wendy Hammond
yes! I never thought I’d drive around with a stash of wipes in my car lol
Jennifer
haha! Peer pressure is REAL!!! I found a running group of ultra runners and they’re always saying, “here…drink the kool-aid, the kool-aid is strong!” And now I’m doing two 50ks this year. LOL
I’ve never pooped in the woods. Idk. That might … I don’t know. If I’m going to run longer races in the woods, that might be something I need to work on? Hmmm…..
Also, yes to #4. So annoying. But, I can’t sleep sweaty so….. ugh.
Wendy Hammond
Oooh good luck!
HoHo Runs
This is such a cute post! “Because I Can” is my standard answer too. I would agree with most (although I haven’t pooped in the woods yet) and would add “It Cuts Into My Sleep” since I’m typically an early morning runner. And lately, I just don’t want to get up. Thanks for linking!
Wendy Hammond
I’m surprised how many commenters have NOT pooed in the woods haha.
Kimberly Hatting
All of the above…except I can say in all honesty I still have never pooed in the woods LOL. I started my Facebook running page and blog as a means to relieve my “regular” friends from all the running propaganda LOL
Wendy Hammond
Love it!

This is all on point! I agree on the shower and the laundry. So much clothes to wash. During the winter it is worse because I wear so many layers to stay warm. Luckily it’s been warming up and I can’t wait to wear shorts again.
Wendy Hammond
yes!
